Community Beautification Recognition Program

PROGRAM DETAILS
The purpose of this program is to recognize Mandan residential and business owners/renters whose properties enhance the aesthetic appearance of the community and to encourage and promote community involvement in keeping Mandan a beautiful place to live, work and play. 

 

Criteria
  • Landscape maintenance or enhancements – existing or new
  • Structural maintenance or enhancements – existing or new
  • Overall aesthetic improvements
  • Appealing, attention-getting seasonal or holiday Displays

Eligibility

  • Properties must be within the city limits of Mandan.
  • Residential or commercial properties – landscapes and buildings/attachments.
  • Street facing or river view areas/landscapes or other publicly viewable areas.
  • Properties are not eligible to win for the same reason or project; however, the same property is eligible to win for a new reason or project.
  • Submit at least one photo of the property/landscape that illustrates reason for nomination.
  • Properties in violation of building, municipal and/or zoning codes will be disqualified.
  • Properties that are delinquent on property taxes are not eligible.

 

NOMINATION PROCESS
Use the Beautification Recognition Nomination Form to nominate yourself, a business, neighbor or any property you believe enhances the aesthetic appearance of the community. Please submit photograph(s) of that great look. Nominations will be reviewed by the Community Beautification Committee (CBC). Nominations may be forwarded on to a period of public voting, then an overall winner from each category will be recognized at a City of Mandan Commission meeting and on the City's website, social medial channels and in the monthly Mandan Messenger printed and e-newsletter. Nominations can be submitted year-round. 

*The City of Mandan will work with the property owner to obtain a signed photo release form for use. If you are the owner, please fill out the form and submit with your nomination form and photos to Communications Specialist Kari Schmidt. 

*If property owner permission is not received, the property will not go on to the public voting period. 

 

AWARD SELECTION
The Community Beautification Committee (CBC) will review nominations and select nominations to forward on the the public voting process with a majority vote. Winners will be notified if their nomination is going on to the public voting period (property owner permission will be obtained prior to the public voting period). Overall category winners will be invited to attend a Mandan City Commission meeting for recognition. Winners will also be featured on the City's website, social media channels and in the Mandan Messenger monthly printed and e-newsletters.

The Community Beautification Committee will review nominations in late spring/early summer each year, with hopes of a public voting period in the summer annually. Recognition will take place for overall winners at a City Commission meeting. Nominations are accepted year-round. 

 

PROGRAM CHANGE NOTE
Prior to June 2025, the CBC committee reviewed nominations as they were received and forwarded on nominations by unanimous vote to the City Commission for recognition. The program was not getting a lot of participation (outside the committee members themselves), so in June 2025 the committee decided to change up the program to include a period of receiving nominations; nominations would then be reviewed by the committee to be forwarded on for the public voting period, then overall winners from each category would be recognized at a City Commission meeting. In 2025, the plan is for a public voting period in the fall, with late fall recognition. Nominations received in 2025 came from CBC members. If this trial run goes well, the plan going forward is for any member of the public to submit nominations year-round, and the public voting period will take place in June/July each year with recognition in July/August.
